GEOGRAPHY

At Holne Chase, we are geographers.

AMBITION

Geography at Holne Chase inspires pupils to understand the world around them, both locally and globally. Each year group will build on their prior knowledge year on year, enabling them to make links and references to earlier learnings. Our classroom environments aim to further stimulate learning as well as to live and breathe the termly topic through visual resources; encompassing the key vocabulary and knowledge. At Holne Chase, we understand the importance of interweaving Geography into the wider curriculum, enabling children to make connections across a number of subject areas.

Our curriculum is built to develop Geographical skills whilst embracing our fun, creativity and achievement ethos through engaging learning activities inside and outside of the classroom.

Children will develop a sense of inquisitiveness and understanding of both the physical and human aspects of the world they live in. The curriculum is designed to ensure that our teaching at Holne Chase provides pupils with knowledge on a range of diverse environments, people, and resources whilst allowing children to discuss, debate and further deepen their understanding.

IMPLEMENTATION

We have worked collaboratively to select clearly sequenced topics that fulfil the requirements of the national curriculum whilst immersing the children in inspiring and fascinating geography to promote a love for the subject. Each year group has a topic that builds on learning from previous years. This ensures children develop geographical enquiry, whilst gaining a breadth of knowledge to help them understand the diversity of human and physical geography on Earth.

Our pupils understanding begins in their local area, and builds on a journey around the world, ensuring key continents are explored. They also explore other areas of the planet – looking beneath the sea at the role the reef plays in keeping oceans healthy. They virtually take a journey to the hottest and coldest areas of the planet and understand how life survives there. Our pupils recognise the force and strength of nature when they learn about volcanoes and earthquakes. Through our sustainability theme, children learn about the human impact on the world and the responsibility we all have in protecting the planet.

Using collaborative and practical approaches to learning where possible, we utilise a range of technology to support the acquisition of strong knowledge and understanding in Geography.

IMPACT

Children understand the importance of the positive impact their generation can have on the world, and the responsibility to protect and preserve. Through their learning of different cultures children demonstrate respect and understanding of the lives of different people around the world making comparisons to their own. Alongside the Eco Science curriculum, and through fun and creative lessons, we prepare and inspire children to make a difference and lead future change.
